October 6th, 2013: Jacob's Ladder

"A slick, riveting, viscerally scary film about what in other hands would be a decidedly unsalable subject, namely death." - Janet Maslin, New York Times

Jacob's Ladder was written by Bruce Joel Rubin and directed by Adrian Lyne.  Both have had a lot of success in the film industry; Rubin with Ghost and Deep Impact, and Lyne with Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal.  The title of this movie  is in reference to a biblical story which shares the same name.

Tim Robbins plays the role of Jacob Singer in this 1990 psychological horror film.  Jacob is a Vietnam veteran who struggles with grotesque hallucinations and flashbacks due to his experiences before and during time he served his country.  As his visions begin to worsen, he desperately tries to figure out the cause of this ordeal by searching for the truth of what happened during his time in the military.

Jacob's Ladder provides plenty of disturbing spastic visuals as you witness the deterioration of the protagonist's mind and body.  Robbins delivers an outstanding performance along with the rest of the cast.  Though the flick did poorly in the box office, it eventually developed a cult following.  It has also inspired many others in their filmmaking, including M. Night Shyamalan and Ryan Murphy.
