October 2nd, 2013: Suspiria

"Encountered as one might a childhood nightmare or a flesh and blood incarnation of a Grimm fairy tale." - Rob Humanick, Projection Booth

This 1977 Italian horror classic is like an evening of going to watch a ballet recital, only to find you're actually visiting a haunted house that you can't get out of.  Though the dialogue and plot lack a little bit of structure, director Dario Argento utilizes vibrant colors, visuals, and stylistic angles that create a beautifully horrific picture.  Prog rock band Goblin also provide a soundtrack that will send chills up and down your spine.

Suzy is an American ballet student who transfers to Tans Academy in Freidberg, Germany.  This prestigious school has everything to offer, including a coven of witches.  As Suzy tries to settle in she notices odd behavior from her classmates.   She quickly learns that what once was a dream for her is now a complete nightmare.

Suspiria sporadically shifts between two different moods leaving you incredibly uncomfortable.  These unbalanced emotions produce most of the horror elements in this film.  The stylistic visuals are also something you rarely see in this genre which makes it more captivating for the audience.  That being said, this is one twisted ballet recital you won't want to miss this time of year.
