October 4th, 2013: A Horrible Way to Die

"A restrained, ripely atmospheric thriller that relies more on mood than on special effects." - Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times

Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett are quickly rising stars in the horror scene.  Both individuals had outstanding segments in the V/H/S films, a couple independent gems, and the most anticipated horror movie of this year; You're Next.  A Horrible Way to Die is the first collaboration between the two.

The story follows Sarah (Amy Seimetz), a recovering alcoholic who is also trying to get over her past relationship.  While trying to get her life back together, she meets Kevin (Joe Swanberg) at one of her AA meetings.  The two hit it off and Sarah begins to finally find happiness again.  Little does she know, it won't last for long.

Garrick (AJ Bowen), Sarah's serial killer ex-boyfriend, escapes from police custody and embarks upon a search for his estranged lover, taking out anyone who crosses his path along the way.  With the body count of his horrific killing spree continues to rise, Sarah must find a way to stop Garrick before she becomes his next victim.

I absolutely love the way this film comes together.  It flashes back and forth between Sarah's current relationship with Kevin and when she was with Garrick. Wingard's camera work is extraordinarily unique and pairs perfectly with the realism in the dialogue provided by Barrett.  As long as these two keep making movies together, I don't think it will be long at all before they reach the top.
